Who is Makiko Tokunaga?
Makiko Tokunaga is a Shibori and indigo dye artist based in Naruto City, Tokushima, Japan, where she runs her studio, IndigoBlue4U. Her practice honors traditional Japanese techniques and a deep respect for nature and the past.
Makiko’s connection to indigo began through her mother, who enjoyed dyeing and Shibori as a hobby and nurtured her interest over the years. Later, Makiko had the opportunity to work in Tokushima, the historical birthplace of sukumo, the fermented indigo used in natural dyeing.
From 2019 to 2022, she participated in a municipal project dedicated to reviving the local indigo culture. During this time, she studied and mastered indigo cultivation, sukumo production, vat preparation, and Shibori dyeing under the guidance of master artisans who preserve these traditional methods.
In 2023, after her husband’s retirement, he joined her to support her growing studio and their shared commitment to offering valuable learning experiences in indigo and Shibori.
Next to the studio is a guesthouse where visitors can stay surrounded by her indigo-dyed textiles. It also features a small library with books and fabrics Makiko has collected for study and inspiration.
Makiko’s goal is to continue deepening her craft and to share the beauty of indigo and Shibori with those who seek to learn.
